Long term committed relationships are not easy. They take hard work and tremendous care to weather the inevitable challenges that couples will face over time. Many couples wait until their relationship is in crisis to seek out help, yet engaging in therapy before you get to that point can be tremendously beneficial. Couples counseling can be an invaluable investment into your relationship. At Potter Counseling, couples counseling is an opportunity to explore and work through unresolved problems and patterns of conflict in your relationship. It can help couples increase their intimacy, affection and trust in their partner and teach ways to communicate and understand each other more effectively.
When working with couples, we utilize both the Gottman Method of Couples Therapy and Emotionally Focused Therapy. The goals of Gottman Method Couples Therapy are to disarm conflictual verbal communication; increase intimacy, respect, and affection; remove barriers that create a feeling of stagnancy; and create a heightened sense of empathy and understanding. Emotionally Focused Therapy draws on attachment theory and seeks to improve couple relationships by enhancing their physical and emotional bond and improve the security both feel in their connection with their partner. Couples work to understand how their negative interaction patterns are rooted in their attachment needs. By openly discussing their emotions and needs, couples can learn to use their vulnerabilities to seek closeness rather than create emotional distance.
Whether you are newly engaged and simply wanting to start your relationship off well, you are trying to heal from a crisis such as an affair or trauma, you are experiencing the toll of stress on your relationship, or have just grown distant and resentful of your partner, we invite you to invest in each other through couples counseling.
