Therapeutic Services for Children & Adolescents

At Potter Counseling, we specialize in working with children, adolescents and their parents. We desire to partner with parents to help their children heal and grow. It can be difficult at times as a parent to know the difference between challenging emotions or behaviors that are a typical part of childhood or teenage years, and those that are cause for concern or indicative of a more significant mental health concern. Seeking help from a therapist can help you know how to discern these types of questions and how to help your child manage their struggles so that they can function best at home, in school, and with their peers.

The counseling process with children should be developmentally appropriate, and often involves more structure than individual therapy for adults. Counseling with young children and school aged children should involve the parent in the treatment process. Older children may meet with a therapist alone, but their parent still remains an involved participant.

At Potter Counseling, we are skilled at treating trauma and a variety of anxiety disorders in children, as well as depression and challenges related to emotional regulation. Therapy addressing these concerns often utilizes a form of cognitive behavioral therapy and teaches a variety of coping strategies. For concerns related to challenging behaviors in children, parent training is a significant component of treatment. We also have experience dealing with behavioral strategies for managing ADHD.

Whether you have an anxious child, a teenager dealing with a recent divorce or stressor, or a child who has experienced a traumatic event, your whole family deserves to receive care that will help you navigate these struggles with a sense of hope and concrete help.

Please note that afterschool appointment times are very limited due to their preference by most families. It can take some time to work your child into an after school appointment time. We are happy to provide you with a note for your school for excused appointments. We appreciate your patience and flexibility with scheduling and hope to accommodate your child as much as possible.
